My Commitment to the Friends, Families, Businesses, and Visitors to Costa Mesa:

1. Focus on Local Issues

My focus will be on the issues that directly affect the residents of Costa Mesa. City government needs to get the basics right and stay focused on its core responsibilities. We should avoid spending valuable staff and City Council time on divisive national issues over which the City has little or no jurisdiction.

The primary focus of City government should be ensuring that the public services funded by your taxes and fees are delivered as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. That means maintaining excellence in public safety, public works, permitting, streets, parks, and other essential City services.

2. Business and Development

Costa Mesa should be a city where business owners, entrepreneurs, and property owners feel welcomed and supported. Whether someone is investing capital to open a new business or rehabilitating older commercial properties, the City should be responsive, efficient, and easy to work with. This benefits both the business community and residents. Businesses can open and grow more quickly, while the City fosters a vibrant and active local economy. Successful businesses generate revenue that helps fund infrastructure improvements, public safety, and other essential City services that benefit everyone in Costa Mesa.

3. Protect Costa Mesa’s Residential Character

California's housing mandates have created a complicated and burdensome set of requirements that, if not managed properly, could significantly alter the character of our community. Any new development should be thoughtful and located in areas that can accommodate growth without changing what makes Costa Mesa such a great place to live and raise a family. A good example is the Fairview Developmental Center property, which is currently being reviewed for potential residential development. We must carefully consider whether proposals for thousands of high-density housing units and the loss of public open space are in the best interest of our residents, or whether a more balanced approach that includes homeownership opportunities and adequate green space would better serve our community.

4. Public Safety

A great place to live and raise a family is a city where residents feel safe and secure. To maintain that standard, we must continue to fully support our police and fire departments and ensure they have the personnel, equipment, and resources necessary to deter crime, respond to emergencies, and protect our community when tragedy strikes.

5. Continue the Progress Being Made on Homelessness

Since the Supreme Court’s Grants Pass decision, cities have regained the ability to enforce anti-camping and vagrancy laws while helping those who are struggling access the services and support they need. This approach benefits both the individuals who need assistance and the community as a whole. Residents deserve a city that is clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. Homelessness numbers in Costa Mesa and throughout Orange County have been declining, and we must continue that progress. We should do our fair share to address this issue while also ensuring that neighboring cities are doing their part.
